    Sailor, set your sails.

The tiny, unassuming clinic sat down a flight of small steps, nestled in an alleyway between a delicatessen and physiotherapists. Though the building was brand new, the space was cramped, it’s narrow corridors easily spanned a single arm length wide. “This assistant smiles too much,” I thought to myself bitterly as the smiling medical office assistant took my picture. I managed a grim smile and lowered myself into one of the two chairs in their claustrophobic sitting nook. The week long migraines I had been suffering from looming threateningly in the background. My vision flashed. I would be alarmed, if this wasn’t the third month of paralysis, pain, and flashing…

    Art, Food, and Life Advice

I finished up “Smoke”, a piece that I’d been delaying for ages. I had made this lovely under-painting, and the thought of messing up the bench had me tied up like a nervous wreck. But, with the help of a kick in the pants by my friend Andrew, I powered though that sucker. He casually smoked some marijuana (legal here), while I squinted away with my tiny brushes at a space the size of my thumb. I ended up taking some sandpaper to the piece and it left some absolutely fascinating textures on the right. Andrew and I are good friends. After some painting we went and made some disassembled…

    Oh Goodness Me!

It has been entirely too long since I’ve posted. I didn’t even give you an update about art battle I’ve been so busy with other projects. That’s okay. I’ll give you the run down of how art battle went, and what I’ve been doing. Art battle went better than I expected. I was extremely nervous to begin with, so I brought my crochet downtown so that I could focus on counting my rows than waiting to begin. I was in the second round, which I wasn’t happy about, because not only did my anxiety stay sky high while they painted, but I also got to see all the talented painters…

    Art Battle!

This August 10th I’m a DUELING BATTLE ARTIST at Art Battle! At last! A use for all those fencing lessons I took as a teenager! I kid of course. Paints, canvases, easels, and painting rags are provided. We’ll be painting on 18×24″ canvases with a large crowd of people around us. Last time I went to Art Battle, it was in June for their Provincial Finals, and all the artists were amazing. I was really impressed with their caliber of painting, and I can only hope is that all the artists I’m paired with coming up, are all total trash. But I kid. It’s great fun. There’s a DJ, a…

Applying to the Banff Centre for the Arts – and doing it badly

First off, let me say that my application itself was flawless. I had the help (and limitless patience) of my friend Jenn, who is a masterful editor and essentially the coolest mofo since whoever invented the toothbrush. My essays were flawless, my biography and resume were on point, my portfolio was acceptable, and my money was good. Problem was, it seemed, that I couldn’t tell the difference between “Winter”, and “Late Winter”. Double check the calendar? Nah. That’s what normal, well organized people do. Notice late that your application says “Late Winter”, and not just “Winter”? Here’s how it goes: Oh! Tech support said something about changing it on my…

    Creative Endeavors

My friend (and fellow artist) Kaye Collins called me up this morning while I was in the middle of a full sadness meltdown, and suggested we do something. “Yes!” I thought to myself, “I will go and do something artistic!” So off I went to the hardware store to buy some lumber and wood glue for my current project inspiration. When we finally met up a few hours later in the heart of Chinatown, we stopped by a jewelry supply store. We stopped and we stayed there. Sorry – I didn’t willing stay there, but rather I was taken HOSTAGE by Kaye’s jewelry supplies browsing. I left my home at…

Got my website up and running – kinda

So about 9 months ago I bought and started hosting my website. I thought it was designed and up for the longest time, until I went and double checked. Shit. Did I just pay over $100 to host a blank page for 8 of those months? Yes. Yes I did. Turns out the website creator I used deleted itself after 1 month, so it’s what you get for not using wordpress or some other “idiot proof” website editor. When I found out I was having visions of learning HTML, and CSS, and Ruby on rails, and Lua, and well everything. I don’t have time for that nonsense anymore! I have…
