Blue Crush : Zine Call Out Deadline August 6th

August 12, 2018 @ 8:00 am - September 6, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

This is a call for submissions for a new risograph-printed zine about swimming which will be the basis for an exhibition by Kerri Flannigan at the fifty fifty arts collective come August. Through personal stories about swimming, we want to consider the ways that we inherit, inhabit, and/or embody our differing lived experiences inform our relationship to swimming, and swim culture. Accepted submissions will be compiled into a zine, as well as a map of stories that will be a part of an upcoming exhibition at the fifty-fifty art collective gallery in Victoria / Lekwungen Territories in August. Potential themes for submission can include how swimming intersects with: - race - disability - accessibility - queer / trans / non-binary experience - friends / family / chosen family - women / queer / trans / non-binary / IBPOC / centered swim spaces / events - embodiment / bodies in public spaces / your body in public spaces - body image - swimwear /bathing suits / fashion - mental / physical health - healing and trauma - pleasure / leisure / vacation / recreation / bathhouses - beach culture / pool culture /swimming culture - land / geography / the sites where you swim / parks systems We are accepting both personal stories (written or audio), illustrated stories or comics, poetry, song, and visual artwork. Because Blue Crush will be printed on a risograph, artwork involving colour should include colour-separated layers – though we have a limit of two layers only (be in touch to ask for more details and a profile of our available colours if you’d like!). This call is open to all. Those of us involved in making the zine are aligned with a queer, trans, feminist, fat-positive mandate that works to uphold anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-transphobic, and anti-racist principals. Unfortunately at this time we do not have any funding from the exhibition or publication and are unable to offer an honorarium. Each accepted submission will receive a copy of the zine, as well as an additional riso print. If funding changes, we would be happy to offer a small honorarium. We want to acknowledge that this work is happening on Lekwungen, W̱SÁNEC, T’Souke and Scia’new Territories - and that histories of settlement, colonization and resistance, inform our movements and navigations of swimming on this land. Who we are: The committee to select submissions so far includes Kerri Flannigan, Alexis Hogan, Dana Levine, and Megan Quigley. If you are interested in helping put this project together drop us a line too! To see examples of some of our previous collaborative work you can visit www.feelingmeasurements.com Thanks for your interest, we hope to hear from you! Submission due date: August 6th, 2018 Exhibition dates: August 12 - September 8th at the fiftyfifty arts collective (Lekwungen Territories)* Submissions can be sent to: bluecrushzine(at)gmail.com
